Lots of clients ask our recommendations for kid-friendly travel.
Here's the answer -- Whatever is easiest for you, then allow for
lots of "down" time. It is completely possible to take the family
to Europe, as long as you remember the following:
1) McDonalds may be their favorite restaurant in Europe.
2) Some kids hate to fly and some get bored on trains. Plan accordingly.
3) Sightseeing should last a half-day. Plan for naps and lots
of running around, particularly after long flights.
4) Know where the bathrooms are beforehand whenever possible.
5) Going to see two churches is one church too many.
6) Pick out one wing of a museum, show kids the pictures, and
make it a treasure hunt.
7) Bring recognizable food - peanut butter,
crackers, cereal.
8) Tell stories about the places you are seeing rather than trying
to regurgitate history. Whenever possible, point out the sights
first in picture books. For example; the Colosseum in Rome or
the gardens at Giverny.
9) When in doubt, get a hotel with a swimming pool.
10) Assign everyone a special afternoon where they get to choose
the activity.
11) Let them know what to expect ahead of time. Go over the itinerary
so they are prepared for what lies ahead.
